There was a time when a road through the Everglades really felt like a road into the unknown. Everglades Highway imagines that journey: a vintage automobile rattling along an unpaved Florida road, palms rising from the wetlands and Everglades City still eight miles ahead. Even the local wildlife seems to have the right of way, with a large alligator stretched beside the road as herons wade in the shallows beyond. Michael P. Clutton turns the scene into a piece of nostalgic Old Florida wall art filled with the romance—and a little of the uncertainty—of early Florida road travel.
Everglades Highway belongs to Michael’s Time Capsule Moments series, where scenes that never existed as historical photographs are created to feel as though they might have. Here, the worn sepia surface, period automobile, hand-painted road sign, dirt highway, and expansive Everglades landscape suggest a photograph tucked away since the early days of motoring through South Florida. Presented as glossy metal wall art, the piece speaks to collectors drawn to vintage Florida decor, Everglades art, classic cars, alligator artwork, and nostalgic road-trip imagery. It’s less a picture of a destination than a reminder of when simply getting there could be an adventure.
